Pergola, patio or verandah?

The names get used loosely, so here's the short version:

• Pergola — an open or slatted-roof structure, often over a deck or paved area, for dappled shade and a sense of space.
• Patio — typically a solid-roof outdoor area that keeps sun and rain off year-round.
• Verandah — a roofed area attached along the house, classic for WA homes.

Materials and approvals

We build in timber and work with patio systems like Stratco where that suits the job. Many smaller, unroofed structures don't need council approval, while roofed patios and larger builds usually do — we'll point you in the right direction and build to the standard required.
