Decks built for the South West climate

The South West's salt air, summer sun and winter wet are hard on outdoor timber. A deck that lasts here comes down to the right material, a proper sub-frame and drainage, and a clean, well-detailed finish. VRC Carpentry has built and repaired decks right across the Capes for 10+ years, so we build for the conditions — not just the photo.

Timber and composite options

We work in the materials that suit your block, budget and how much upkeep you want:

  • Jarrah — WA's own hardwood. Rich, deep red, extremely durable and ages beautifully; a classic local choice.
  • Merbau — a hard-wearing, good-value hardwood with a warm brown tone, widely used for decking across WA.
  • Composite (NewTechWood, Ekodeck and similar) — timber-look boards that don't need oiling and shrug off the weather; ideal if you want low maintenance.

What's involved

Every deck starts with a proper look at your site — levels, drainage, height and access all change the build. From there we handle the lot: footings and sub-frame, the deck and any steps, balustrades and screening, and the finishing. Vaughn does the work himself, so the standard stays consistent from frame to final board.

Questions

FAQs

Timber or composite — which should I choose?
Both are great; it comes down to look and upkeep. Hardwoods like Jarrah and Merbau give you natural timber character but want an occasional oil; composite costs a bit more up front but is close to maintenance-free. We'll talk you through it for your block.
How long will a deck last?
A well-built hardwood deck, looked after, lasts decades; composite is built for a long, low-maintenance life. The sub-frame and drainage matter as much as the boards — which is where good building pays off.
Do you build steps and balustrades too?
Yes — steps, balustrades, privacy screening and the finishing are all part of the job.
